Using Tarps For Home Improvement

Tarps are common in the construction industry and are a necessity. Tarps are used for a variety of purposes on construction sites. They are needed to cover and protect materials, roofs, and lumber. Construction tarps are also needed to protect cement that is delivered to the site and protect dry wall boards, as well as many other materials, equipment and supplies. There are also specialty construction tarps for plants and machinery. You can find a wide variety of construction tarps for all of your business needs.

Heavy Duty Tarps

Heavy Duty Tarps come in silver and white. They are beneficial because they have grommets at every eighteen inches rather than the usual grommets at every thirty-six inches. Those with the wider spaces between the grommets are of a lower quality tarp. Heavy Duty Tarps are a high quality product that is affordable. The money you invest in these tarps will pay off well in the long term. Protect your materials, equipment and supplies without worrying about them. There is also a UV (ultra violet) inhibitor added into the tarps that will give the tarps a longer life even when out in the sun for long periods of time. The sun can damage many things, but with this UV inhibitor it will take a lot longer to damage these Heavy Duty Tarps.

Generic Blue Tarps

Builders often opt for the generic blue tarps because they are cheaper. Sometimes these blue tarps are good enough for the project they are working on. They wont be out there for a long period of time so a cheap and simple blue tarp will be all they need.

Poly Tarps

In the South Eastern part of the United States, including Florida, the use of tarps has been extensive due to the numerous hurricanes that have come that way during the last few years. Canvas tarps were used many years ago and they are still available. However, the Poly tarp that is used on building sites the most is of a better quality. Many more builders are now using Poly tarps.

Poly tarps are probably the most popular kind of tarp available to you. They come in a variety of sizes, shapes, colors, and prices. You can find a poly tarp to help you in construction, with tents, with a canopy, for a carport, for a yard project, and even special occasions such as a wedding. Many people need poly tarps to replace the tarps that are worn out on their canopies. The canopy frame almost always outlives the tarp itself and is cheaper and easier to just replace the tarp instead of buying a whole new canopy.

Fire Retardant Tarps

Fire retardant tarps are also used in construction sites, because they can help protect the materials, equipment and supplies in the event of a fire, especially when the crew is away from the construction site. Fire retardant tarps are available in white and silver. Heavy duty tarps are available in red, yellow and orange. These colors are perfect for when you want your tarps to be highly visible no matter what. You can also keep these tarps and use the different colors for different items.

Tarps can be used for a wide variety of uses. Many people use them on their canopies, on tents, projector screens, to protect vehicles, and even to protect anything else that needs to be left outside for an extended period of time.

There are so many uses for tarps it is nearly unbelievable. They can be very handy for anyone. They can help to protect your outdoor equipment such as an ATV, dirt bike, moped, motorcycle, bicycles, your cars, and more. Use tarps to help you protect your business items and your home items.

Consider Installing a Standby Generator

Now is definitely the time to consider installing a standby generator. Hurricane season starts in a couple of months and there is no reason to believe that the shortage of electrical power will be corrected in the near future. Weather systems have been producing severe weather throughout North America and other parts of the world, in areas that have not seen these phenomena previously. The installation of a standby generator will provide you and your family with security and comfort in the event the power grid or local disaster stops the flow of electrical power to your home.

Standby generators come in a variety of sizes for both residential and commercial applications. The size governs the maximum power that you will have available in the even of a power outage. Some homeowners want the comfort and security provided by a totaEC2l replacement of the incoming power, while others are satisfied with having enough energy to maintain, heating, refrigerators, freezers, and some basic lighting.

Convenience is also a consideration when considering the size of the standby generator that you require. As an example, the stove and hot water tank (if they are electric) create the highest amount of power consumption in a home. A standby generator can be installed so that you can have hot water and your stove but not at the same time.

Heating and air conditioning are also heavy electrical energy draws. Again, a homeowner may be satisfied with the loss of air conditioning for a few days rather than pay for a standby generator that can deliver enough power to keep the house cool. If you have forced air heating, the blower uses a motor that requires electricity to operate. Without an operating blower, the furnace will not work even if gas or fuel oil supplies are still available.

A standby generator is not the same as a portable generator although a portable generator can be used to supply temporary power. Standby generators are generally installed so that they start automatically and switch the load, in the event of a power failure. A portable generator usually requires set-up, including the physical connection to whatever load it is to service, and must be started manually. The amount of fuel available is usually substantially different. Where a standby generator is usually equipped with enough fuel for at least 72 hours of uninterrupted operation a portable generator may have three to five hours of run time with its fuel supply.

Standby generators are available to operate from natural gas (NG), liquid propane (LP), or diesel fuel. If your local zoning will allow, I recommend the installation of a LP standby generator. LP has the advantage that it is stored on your property so that should the natural gas delivery system also be affected because of the natural disaster (in many instances the natural gas pipeline will be shut down after a natural disaster to avoid potential explosions from fallen wires), it will not affect your ability to generate electrical power. Diesel standby generators are generally used in commercial facilities. Diesel, although stored locally on the site, has the disadvantage that after a period of time it needs to be replaced, if not used. This can be a costly expense.

Whichever type of generator you purchase make sure you follow the manufacturers installation instructions and your local building codes. The installation of a standby generator does require a building permit. Remember that any electrical generator, portable or stationary, uses a combustion engine to power it. Where there is a combustion engine operating, you have will have carbon monoxide gas, which is toxic.

Proper planning is the key to a successful standby generator installation.

Hooked On Body Building

Body building champions are not cut from the same cloth as the majority of people. Body building dependence appears to affect male and female body builders equally, despite previous claims that it is predominantly a male problem. Body Building is the process of developing muscle through the combination of weight training, increased caloric intake, and rest. Body building nutritional supplements are easily available in every health food store and most gyms. Body building not only helps you physically but mentally as well because it builds self-confidence, makes you more disciplined and helps you achieve your goals in life.

Protein

Whey protein and soy protein are protein supplements effective for bodybuilding in men and women. Additionally, during the off-season, adequate protein must be available to provide amino acids for protein synthesis. Furthermore, during the pre-contest phase, protein intake must be adequate to maintain muscle mass. A relatively high protein intake (approximately 30% of energy intake) reduces lean mass loss relative to a lower protein intake (approximately 15% of energy intake) during energy restriction. The higher protein intake will also provide a relatively large thermic effect that may aid in reducing body fat. Consumption of protein / amino acids and carbohydrate immediately before and after training sessions may augment protein synthesis, muscle glycogen resynthesis and reduce protein degradation. The vast majority of body-builders believe they must consume large amounts of animal protein daily to get results. Many body builders take up to 45% of their calories as protein, believing this leads to large muscle gain.

Builder

Others believe bodybuilder discipline is the answer. For one thing, bodybuilders realize that a strong mind and a strong body go together. Despite all these wonderful preventative measures, however, sometimes even the bodybuilder can go astray. The champion body builders that you read about and see in the magazines are experts in modeling. Many professional Body Builders know that their imagery and mental techniques account for a big part of their success. Only 20 minutes a day, and you will discover how the successful bodybuilders make such impressive gains in such a short time. Someone who engages in this activity is referred to as a bodybuilder. As a sport (competitive bodybuilding) body builders display their physiques to a panel of judges, who assign points based on their aesthetic appearance. Body builders use resistance weight training to increase muscle size. However, they point out, many differences exist in the motivations and psychological characteristics of bodybuilders compared with other exercising populations.

Body building is actually a sport whereby competitive body builders display their muscular bodies in front of a panel of judges who assign points to determine the rankings and prize awards. Body building is tough enough without feeling frustrated and defeated when you look in the mirror. Body building benches are fairly inexpensive new, and if you frequent yard sales, you'll probably run across a cheap used bench every so often. Body building can be done on a budget, no question about it.

Fast List Building - How to Build Permission Based Mailing List

It is very important that you get the email address of your clients. This will help you make sales to those people who are already interested on your products or services. In this line, it is also important that you acquire the email addresses of these clients with their permission so that you will not be branded as spammer.

Here are some tips on how you can build permission-based mailing list.

1.You need to update your list as soon as a client changed their companies or their ISPs. This is to make sure that you would still contact them.

2.When you do direct marketing, make sure that you would include an email registration info so that you can add up to your list.

3.You can also get the email addresses of your clients once they buy the product. You can get their email address at cash registers. This only shows that they want your product and that is why they are buying it.

4.If you are sending in brochures or cards to your clients via US mail, then provide an opt in or clients to be included in your mailing list.

5.Provide a squeeze in to your site where potential customers can add their email address in your list.

Remember that you cannot build your list within a day. This takes time and a lot of effort. But this will really give you the best results after you have dedicated your time and effort.

Hawthorne Experiments and Team Building

The hawthorne experiments

The Hawthorne Experiments were conducted by Professor Elton Mayo, from 1927 to 1932, at the Western Electric Hawthorne Works in Chicago. The experiments were primarily started with the intention of studying the relationship between productivity and work conditions. Professor Mayo started these experiments by examining the physical and environmental influences of the workplace (e.g. brightness of lights, humidity) and then moved on to the psychological aspects (e.g. breaks, group pressure, working hours, managerial leadership).

The Hawthorne Effect

The findings in Hawthorne Experiments have been generally described as the Hawthorne Effect, which can be summarised as "Individual behaviors may be altered because they know they are being studied." This is, however, only one of the many useful conclusions that Professor Mayo made. For example, Mayo also found that worker productivity increased with the psychological stimulus of being shown individual attention, feeling involved, and being made to feel important.

About the Experiment

Mayo selected two ladies from the factory, and they in turn chose another four ladies to participate in the experiment. The team worked in isolation, under the supervision of a friendly supervisor who established a working relationship with them. He took time to explain the changes that were to be introduced, asked for their feedback and listened to their complaints.

Mayo then varied the working conditions like working hours and number and duration of rest breaks in stages. The level of production is mechanically recorded, while the supervisor recorded the teams behaviour.

Elton Mayo's Conclusions on Team Performance

Among other findings, these conclusions made by Mayo have significantly impacted the way management ran their production plant from then on and, we believe, resulted in the eventual birth of the concept of team building:

Relationships between supervisor and workers affected productivity. Mayo discovered that the relationships between workers and their supervisors affected production. The working relationship that the supervisor established with the workers was not a usual on at that time. Women did not have a high social status at the workplace and when the supervisor asked for the feedback from the ladies and listened to their complaints, it gave them a sense of self-worth. Mayo believed that this spurred them on to produce more even when all the privileges were taken away.

Workgroup norms significantly affected productivity. If most people produced at a particular level after a change was made, everyone tended to produce at that level, as it was a fair days work (this confirmed similar conclusions made previously by other researches)

The workplace has a culture. A workers performance is affected by internal and external social demands. Informal groups within the work plant influence the habits and attitudes of the workers.

Being taken care of. Being recognised for their work, feeling secured and a sense of belonging is more important that physical conditions at work.

Emergence of team building

One of the most crucial conclusions from the experiments is that toward the end of the tests, when all of the privileges were taken away, productivity continued to rise to an all time high. It was reasonably concluded that the production team were more motivated to work hard by the factors listed above than the physical working conditions. The researchers also noted that there was a possibility that the production team was grateful that the experiments were extended from the initial arrangement of one year to five.

In the decades that followed, employers became aware of the importance of maintaining a positive work culture and relationship with workers and probably led to the emergence of team building exercises and retreats.

The article was contributed by Alvin Quah, a certified behavioral analyst (in business consulting perspectives), who is registered with the Institute for The Motivational Living, Inc, USA. He can be contacted through the website: Team Building Singapore

American Indians and Plants in the Great Basin of North America - An Ancient Relationship

Originally, many scholars viewed the possibility of this ancient relationship with some skepticism, primarily because of the early anthropological work of Julian Steward, and the overall general unfamiliarity with the Great Basin environment. Rather than according the American Indians of the Great Basin the knowledge and cultural sophistication they deserved for sustainably and symbiotically living in their homeland, scholars hypothesized that indigenous Great Basin peoples were:

1) the least developed in terms of cultural sophistication and complexity,
2) had only recently migrated into the Great Basin from more resource rich areas, and
3) had little or no knowledge of Great Basin ecology. Therefore,
4) they were a dying cultural group that required little or no consultation in contemporary Great Basin resource issues.

As researchers began to actually work with Great Basin peoples, and slowly learned the epistemic value of their traditional ecological knowledge, a very different understanding has emerged. It became apparent that the Paiute, Shoshone, and other indigenous people of the Great Basin have been in their traditional homelands for thousands of years, and that their traditional lifeways and the general Great Basin ecosystem were only recently disrupted by Euroamerican colonial processes. Further, it became clear as more research was conducted that an ancient relationship between American Indians and plants in the Great Basin existed, and that knowledge from such a relationship could offer insights into restoring the Great Basin ecosystem and other natural resources problems currently at issue.

The Great Basin is a region encompassing more than 115,800 square miles between the Sierra Nevada of California in the west and the Wasatch Range of Utah in the east. The region is bounded to the north by the lower Snake River plain in Idaho and to the south by the Grand Canyon and Colorado River. Composed of a series of large, internally draining basins in which seasonal lacustrine marshes and lakes form, the Great Basin has historically provided a rich variety of resources that American Indians have relied upon for 10,000 years or more. Furthermore, these seasonally dry and sparsely vegetated basins are geographically divided by a series of north to south mountain ranges that historically provided resources in a seasonal cycle from the basin floor to the upper mountain slopes. As a result of this geography, perennial mountain streams form each spring that historically provided a number of riverine based floral resources. By knowing the environment, weather, and geography of the Great Basin, American Indians could successfully find plant resources at all times of the year. Evidence for this ancient and symbiotic relationship comes primarily from archaeological and ethnographic data, although biological data also supports these conclusions.

The archaeological evidence, which has become more refined and extensive since the time of early theories discussing American Indians of the Great Basin, argues that American Indians and plants of the Great Basin have shared an 8,000 year or longer relationship. In the eastern Great Basin, for example, the earliest evidence of people in the area comes from sites located along prehistoric lakeshores in the basin floors where people subsisted largely on seasonally available lacustrine resources. Later, evidence indicates that Great Basin peoples began to also utilize upland regions that were situated in the pion-juniper ecozones, allowing access to sage and grass communities as well as higher montane resources. Faunal and floral macrofossils, coupled with pollen analyses from across the Great Basin, further evidences a dependence on wetland food resources augmented with small seeds from dryland plants beginning in the early Holocene (9600-7000 years ago) and continuing into the ethnographic period. Although other resources apparently fluctuated over time in the diets of Great Basin peoples, plant-based resources remained constant.

Not only was plant-life exploited for subsistence purposes, but peoples of the Great Basin also used floral resources in the construction of shelters, mats, clothing, and especially baskets. The exploitation of plant-life in the construction of baskets was so important, in fact, that it has been possible to identify at least three distinct basketry manufacturing regions. Each region had special characteristics that delineated it from other basketry manufacturing styles, such as in the northern Great Basin where at least 13 different basket wall-construction techniques have been identified over time. These include at least six different coiling techniques and seven basic twining methods such as close simple twining, close diagonal twining, and open simple twining.

Beginning in the 1800s, however, contact with Euroamericans and their cultural products (i.e., diseases, material goods, weapons, horses, etc.) resulted in a disruption of the millennia old relationship between American Indians and plants of the Great Basin. This disruption was rapid and severe, as thousands of Euroamericans entered the Great Basin to begin agricultural, industrial, or resource extraction endeavors. These processes and events, such as the now famous Comstock mining explosion, or the development of the Newlands project near present-day Reno, or the massive cattle and sheep ranching operations that took place in the early and middle twentieth century, completely disrupted the ancient symbiotic relationship between American Indians and plants in the Great Basin.

These colonizing processes of the 1800s radically changed the ecology of the Great Basin. The seasonal marshes and lacustrine resources were either trampled, drained, or consumed. Large areas were transformed into agricultural fields that produced non-indigenous agricultural products. Giant mines and their waste transformed entire mountains and watersheds, polluting the land and making it impossible for the native plants to grow. As a result of these and many other processes, the relationship between American Indians and plants of the Great Basin has been seriously tested. Unable to access traditional resources and areas, much of this relationship has been maintained through oral traditions, ceremonial and religious practices, and in the minds and hearts of tribal elders. Today, however, there may be hope for reinvigorating this ancient relationship once again.

Great Basin peoples are beginning to establish cultural programs that teach their youth ancient cultural values and knowledge. Environmentalists and resource managers are attempting to clean up mines and restore watersheds, and applied and action-oriented social scientists are advocating for the inclusion of Great Basin peoples voices in resource issues. Together these processes bring hope to a formally bleak picture. By working together, it is possible to once again allow this relationship between American Indians and plants of the Great Basin to flourish. Through communication, consultation, and collaboration this relationship can not only flourish, but it can be strengthened by the addition of all voices involved.

Modern Outdoor Furniture - More than Folding Aluminum Chairs

The calendar is busily at work, announcing to the world that summer is just around the corner. A wave of nostalgia washes over me. In my minds eye I am traveling back 50 years, going from snapshot to snapshot. We were a typical middle-class family living in suburbia. Everything was simple and people were happy.

Within this frame of happiness, we did a lot of things together as a family, using the best of the outdoors. No matter where my minds eye went, it seems to me that some form or another of outdoor furniture figured prominently. At the beach watching the waves. On our asphalt driveway, my father, following his weekly ritual of barbecuing while he and my uncle would cheer at the Los Angeles Dodgers game tinnily blaring from a transistor radio. Probably my favorite snapshot was sitting on our backyard patio, talking with my grandfather or just sitting there, watching him smoke his beloved cigars and thumb through his foreign language newspapers. We cannot forget the fabric and aluminum hammock taking the place of honor on our screened-in porch. What a haven that was. I read countless books while occupying that hammock, hiding from sweltering summer afternoons. It was such a treat when Mom allowed me to sleep there overnight when the heat was simply too much for a person to endure inside.

And what was the common denominating factor tying all these experiences together? Folding aluminum outdoor furniture. There seemed to be a folding aluminum chair tucked away here, there, and everywhere, from our garage to the far corner of our huge backyard.

Now, 50 years later, the array of outdoor furniture is positively staggering. The choices have metamorphosed from the basic aluminum folding chairs and chaise lounges to whatever your mind can conceive.

In the 21st century, outdoor furniture has become quite sophisticated. The materials used are endless. Do you want as chair of bamboo or of teak? Perhaps you might wish for a more countrified or natural look. Woods filling this bill include cedar, redwood, and maple. Or, in a flight of whimsy, you would like to experiment, using some very less known woods such as balau, ipe, jarre, or kempas which are known for their resistance to warpage and rot, are fairly hard, and have a fine grain. All of a sudden your backyard is no longer mundane but filled with all sorts of textural and visual delights.

How about metal-based lawn furniture? At one time, metal chairs were made of aluminum. That was your sole choice. Rather in a rut? Now, not only is basic aluminum used; it is available in extruded, cast, and wrought forms. It is such a popular metal because of its exaggerated lightness, and is so strong it is used in the construction of jets, as well as being corrosion resistant and durable. Wrought iron is another popular material for outdoor furniture. It is lovely to look at with its intricate filigree work but horrendous to lift because of its tremendous weight. Once a piece of wrought iron furniture has been set in its place in your yard, it is wise to plan upon leaving it there permanently unless there are mitigating circumstances.

The last major group of materials that might be of interest in the construction of outdoor furniture is truly miscellaneous. It is here that the design of your furniture is only limited by your dreams. Plastic or vinyl give a casual look, decidedly appropriate for use around your swimming pool. Inflatable vinyl can be blown up to make child-sized chairs. Beanbag chairs can be fun, too. Wicker is slightly more formal, depending upon which plant material is used in the weaving. Benches can be made from concrete but again, once they are placed, it is doubtful you will want to rearrange them. Hammocks can also add a different look, from tropical to being simply fasted between two trees, swinging gently in the breeze.
