Build Your Own Hovercraft In A Weekend

Hovercrafts, also known as Air-Cushion Vehicles (ACV), are amphibious vehicles that move on a layer of pressurized air. Because of their unique design, they can cruise over virtually any surface: water, road, grass, snow and ice. As a result of their flexible nature, Hovercrafts have a great advantage in military applications, but they aren't just for the military. Lots of hobbyists love them too, especially since they are easy to build and with a good set of plans you can build a Hovercraft in a single weekend.

Some hobbyists prefer building and racing radio-controlled hovercrafts, which much like toy boats and helicopters, are controlled from a distance. But theres a lot more fun to be had than watching a small toy hovercraft fly around the local pond. You can actually build a hovercraft for yourself, and then get in it and take it for a drive. You can take your hovercraft for a nice leisurely cruise on the lake, or you can race your kids in the crafts you helped them build! If you get even more involved in hovercraft construction and operation, there are clubs to join as well so you can race fellow hobbyists and share building tips that will help you get more speed out of your craft.

And I have to say, Im a big klutz and even I managed to follow these plans without hurting myself or anyone else in the vicinity. On a weekend trip to my sisters, who happens to live near a lake, I made a short supply run to Lowes and then arrived on my sisters doorstep with plywood stacked up in the car. Her husband, myself and my brother put the Hovercraft together in less than a day and then spent the early part of the evening fighting over who got to use it next, so I think next time were going to try putting two more together so we can all race each other. Having done it once, Im pretty sure now I could just build the next one myself. The plans are easy to follow and well-illustrated for even a hardware newbie like myself to follow. And they really are just an incredible amount of fun. I'm actually looking forward to winter so I can try it out on the ice.

Tips For Framed Mirrors In Your Decor!

Framed mirrors are as necessary to your dcor as that new pair of spring shoes is to your wardrobe. Whether it's your bathroom, living room, hall, or baby's room a mirror adds spacious beauty to the room.

When you hang your mirror make sure the reflection is one worth sharing. Let's say you hang a mirror in your bathroom but the reflection is that of your toilet. Appealing? No! But lets say it reflects the beautiful outdoors giving an illusion of another window. Appealing? Absolutely!

1. Bathroom

Over the sink is always a popular place for a bathroom mirror. Putting your makeup on or shaving is a lot easier with a nice large mirror and a framed one adds a real touch to the dcor!

If you have room add an additional mirror that's on a swivel arm. It's great for those close up moments and you can also see the back of your head to take care of any bad hair days before they get rolling.

If your bathroom is really small and you want to make it appear bigger. Hang a framed mirror over the bathtub. It will instantly make your room feel much better.

2. Master Bedroom

If you have an open wall buy a framed wall mirror. You'll get the functionality you need and add to your dcor. If you don't have an available wall then use the back of the door or the closet door. Not nearly as effective for the dcor but at l5B4east you get the functionality you need. After all you don't want to leave the house with your shirt tail or slip hanging out.

3. Office

A desk facing a wall isn't good for the energy flow of the room but you can compensate buy hanging a large mirror on the wall. And it will also make your room feel larger and you more comfortable because no one will be sneaking up behind you.

4. Foyer/Entrance

There's nothing like the touch of a large mirror at the entrance. And if your foyer is large enough place a small tea table with the mirror above it. It not only looks great it also gives you the chance to do that last minute check before you rush out the door. And the tables handy for dropping those necessaries like your keys.

5. Living Room

If you have a fireplace in your living room then you've just got to add a mirror above it. It's dramatic and it adds warmth to the room making it inviting and relaxing. It reflects the room activities.

No fireplace then consider using a blank wall as a feature wall. Perhaps add a candle on each side. Now don't just place the candles there, use them. The wonderful glow and the flicker of the candles in the mirror is so relaxing.

6. Childs Room

Children love to look at themselves so what better way than to put a mirror in their room. And baby's love to entertain themselves with their own reflection so hang a mirror on the wall near the crib o5B4r change table or place it in a mobile. Remember to adjust for your child's eye level. Functional and it will look great too! Especially if you add a bit of a child's touch.

Baby's room choose a nursery mirror or continue your existing theme. Child's room let them choose. Kid's all have their favorite characters or themes. Let them have some fun.

7. Dining Room

A mirror over your buffet is a beautiful touch. If you have a small room a mirror can also make your dining room feel much bigger. But make sure that it doesn't reflect the dirty dishes at the sink.

8. Hallway

Hallways are usually long and narrow so the illusion of spaciousness can be achieved by using mirrors especially if the light reflects correctly on the mirror.

Framed mirrors are a great way to add those finishing touches to your dcor. And with so many choices available from online retailers you're certain to find the perfect one!

Adding Thousands of Dollars to The Value of Your Home Without Spending a Lot of Money

The secret to saving thousands of dollars on kitchen cabinets is slowly getting out to the general public. Retail prices have doubled in the past few years because of their high overhead expenses: gas prices, rent increases and also the cost of labor. While cabinets have been available on-line for years, the Internet kitchen cabinet business is exploding. More and more people are finding out that they do not have to pay high retail prices for kitchen cabinets.

It makes sense. If you can buy something online, you are probably going to save money. Simple economics puts a retail store at a disadvantage. The store has a large amount of overhead and shipping costs that also need to be hidden in the retail prices. At the same time, an internet store has little overhead and is often linked to a direct importer. However, always remember to shop around online. Many places offer good prices, but with a little searching and a few good key words, you can turn up even better deals.

I mentioned key words and this means that there are certain buzzwords in the kitchen cabinet business that you should know. The most important phrase is RTA kitchen cabinets. This simply means ready to assemble. Most kitchen cabinets are not assembled; however a retail store will assemble them for you and charge you plenty. All you need to know is that RTA kitchen cabinets can easily be assembled. No drills or hammers, just a flat head screwdriver and some patience. Don't just look for cabinets, dig a little deeper and use a good phrase like RTA kitchen cabinets. It will save you thousands of dollars on a large kitchen order.

You may also find that the good RTA kitchen cabinet sites will offer a good selection of bathroom vanities, including Euro vanities and other new designer styles. Again, these type of cabinets and vanities are being sold in retail stores for as high as 200% more than what you can find online. Yes this sounds absurd, but a quick check of a big box retailer and then going to an RTA kitchen cabinet website and you will see that the savings are huge. Also keep in mind that a good amount of the retail kitchen cabinets and bathroom vanities are made of particleboard. On the other hand, a good RTA site will use only real wood and plywood.

When you're online remember that there is no such thing as free shipping. Repeat this with me, "there is no free shipping". What some Internet sites do is increase cabinet prices, and try to lure you in with free shipping. RTA kitchen cabinets can be expensive to ship, but not as expensive as fully assembled cabinets. Yes it will cost some money, but if you add that in with your saving on the kitchen cabinets, you will still find that you are way ahead in savings.

So don't waste your time at Home Depot or the other big box building supply stores. They are not saving you money. Go online and don't stop at the first kitchen cabinets site you find, dig around and you will find some good buys. And remember, use the phrase RTA kitchen cabinets and you will be pleasantly surprised at the savings that are out there.

I have been able to save thousands of dollars on discount kitchen cabinets by buying RTA cabinets. If you are interested in finding out my secrets, go to my Kitchen Cabinets article at Hubpages.

Roofing Material

A fine roof is an essential element of a well planned home. Employing experienced workforce and use of high quality equipment is important. Rates, simplicity of setting up and appearance are all deciding factors in selecting a roofing material. It is important to examine a roof structure before deciding upon a material. Walls, beams and structures must sustain the weight of the roofing material, which are available in wide varieties.

Composition shingles are reasonably priced and offer a fresh look. These are hardwearing, have low maintenance costs and are fire resistant. Shingles maybe made of recycled material. However, they usually have a short life span and can be blown away by strong winds.

Roofing tiles are a more modern and long lasting alternative for roofing. They are fire and rot resistant and cannot be destroyed by insects. This type of roofing needs little maintenance, hence is a popular option.

Wood shakes wear, over time, but it is a natural look and the wood allows a house to take in air. Unfortunately, they are also susceptible to mold, rot and insects. This roofing requires appropriate repairs and renovation. Standing-seam steel, aluminum or coated steels are popular metal roofing varieties. These are strong, fire resistant and need low maintenance. Mostly made from eco-friendly material, they weigh less and maybe installed over existing roof structures.

Slate, although a costly option, offers an extremely natural appearance and great fire resistance. Slate roofing requires low maintenance and is not at risk from insects. They are also heavy, brittle and cause difficulties in rooftop repairs and drainage cleaning. Concrete includes a variety of fiber-reinforced cement products. They are durable, long lasting and need low maintenance.

Purchasing high priced materials does not always mean they will be superior and not all products are suitable for the needs of all homes. It is vital that homeowners choose the right material, ensure correct installation and conduct timely assessments, which provides longevity of roofs. If the right selection is made, a roof may survive for 20 to 50 years, and at times, much longer.

Window Coverings 101 - To Inside Mount or to Outside Mount, That Is The Question

After much thought this morning I have gathered thoughts on the best way to answer a question from a client that came to me yesterday. Specifically, their question was more about Window Coverings in general rather than a specific type of covering. This gives me a unique place to start which really should be the way I start all my articles. The question was: "What is the difference between "Inside Mount" and "Outside Mount" when it comes to Blinds, Shades & Shutters?" I have laid out the basics below so please read on...

The first thing to understand is when selected "mount type" in Window Coverings; you may not have a choice at all. If your home builder mounted the glass or window frames so that you do not have a Window Well (a recessed area which holds the Window frame and glass) you don't have a choice.

There simply is no "inside" to order a Blind or Shade made as an Inside Mount. That being said, I would like to address the large portion of readers who do have the choice of how their Blind are mounted.

Determine your goals -

Do you want the most privacy? The most light control? The lowest price? The least obtrusive style?

If so, you are describing Inside Mount Window Treatments. They fit neatly inside the home builder's window well and are by far the most popular way to mount Window Blinds. I have an illustration of Inside Mount Blinds applications which can be seen here.

Do you want to enlarge the look of your Window? Do you want to frame your view? Are you mounting to a door or to a window where there is no window well to allow an inside mount?

If so, you are in need of an Outside Mount Window Treatment. They mount onto the face of the wall surface and normally mount above the window header a few inches to allow for brackets. It is also important to order these Window Covers a few inches wider than the window to make certain you get privacy on both sides of your Blind or Shade. Again, I have assembled an illustration here to show the differences of the two styles and how to measure for each.

Next week, I will go over Window Covering Installation in detail.

What is Siding?

This article talks in brief about all the types of Sidings available in the market. It tells you the advantages and disadvantages of each of the Sidings. Siding is the outer covering of a house meant to shed water and protect from the effects of weather.

It may comprise horizontal boards, vertical boards, shingles, or sheet materials. In all four cases, avoiding wind and rain infiltration through the joints is a major challenge, met by overlapping, by covering or sealing the joint, or by creating an interlock1C4Ding joint such as a tongue-and-groove or rabbet. Since building materials expand and contract with changing temperature and humidity, it is not practical to make rigid joints between the elements.

Siding - Option's Today

This serves a very important role in home building simply for the fact that it does not only serve a decorative purpose but it protects the sheathing from the wear and tear of extreme climates

Something that is not talked about too often is the building paper. This is an essential part of siding. After one decides what kind of siding one wants, one will always have to buy building paper, which is black in color. It is the base of the covering. It is this layer onto which the siding material is attached too. Since it is behind the actual visible layer, it is left out sometimes, but nevertheless, it is an integral part of any siding project

Different Types of Sidings

Siding may be made of wood, metal, plastic, or composite materials. It may be attached directly to the building structure (studs in the case of wood construction), or to an intermediate layer of horizontal planks called sheathing.

Some of the siding materials are made out of:

Wood

Here, wood is placed in overlapping horizontal rows or "courses", called clapboard. In colonial times, Eastern white pine was the most common material. Wood siding can also be made of unpainted weather-resistant woods such as redwood. Jointed horizontal siding may be shiplapped.

Plastic

Wood clapboard is often imitated using vinyl. It is usually produced in units twice as high as clapboard. Plastic imitations of wood shingle and wood shakes also exist. Vinyl or plastic siding has grown in popularity due to the generally low maintenance and low cost appeal it offers.

Metal

Utilitarian buildings often use corrugated galvanized steel sheet siding. Formerly, imitation wood clapboard was made of aluminum: 'aluminum siding'.

Composite materials

Various composite materials are also used for this purpose for instance, asphalt, asbestos, fiber cement, aluminum (ACM) etc. They may be in the form of shingles or boards, in which case they are sometimes called clapboard.

The main function of siding is protection, from extreme weather or from excess water. It protects the house from these agents. Because this adds an aesthetic appeal to the house one lives in, there are many researchers today who are trying to study and develop new forms of siding which will provide a lot of security to the house, without compromising on the aesthetic appeal.

Ceramic Tile For A Sophisticated Touch In Your Bathroom

Tiles are commonly used in home flooring surfaces. They may come in many types and sizes. Sizes are usually flat and square. Ceramic tiles are preferred by many architects for better durability and damp-resistant.

On a simple bathroom design, the color must be carefully chosen to prevent breaking a good ambience. There are colors such as peach, yellow to show out a country-like feel to it. White and beiges can make the bathroom bigger that it actually is. The color green, blue, violet are exquisite colors that can give a soothing effect to the eyes. The black and red colors absorb light and would only be recommended to apply on larger areas. As the colors depict its own moods, these accent tiles can also be used in small bathrooms.

The prices of common ceramic tiles are not that expensive. As they vary in size, texture and shape, they can give you more choices to customize your bathroom and other areas in your house as well.

On carrying them, they are a bit fragile but extra care on transportation would be enough. The installation and assembly can be easy especially on standard patterns. Nevertheless, if you really want to get a custom pattern, there can be websites on the internet that can give you templates to copy.

Here are some tips to get a nice outcome on your tiling project:

1. You need to choose a brighter color as they are. They will be wider to look at especially the wall of your bathroom; this can really bring out the nice features of ceramic tiles.

2. Get bigger-sized tiles. On a typical bathroom, it will be easier to install rather than small squares. It will get an impression of a bigger especially on bright small bathroom.

3. Use textured tiles. Especially on a bathroom, you need tiles that need grip even when it is wet. This is crucial to avoid accidents, hard textures are the way to go, and your safety is your first concern.

You can easily get the nice quality of bathroom ceramic tiles in your local hardware store. If you also want to use some nice rare ones, you can get them online with ease.
