Skylights & Roof Windows - A Short History of Roof Lanterns & How They Can Be Used Today

A roof lantern in its traditional form is essentially a glass and timber roof light, very much like a miniature conservatory roof, which is incorporated, usually into an area of flat roof, in order to introduce light into the area below.

It is also possible to incorporate a roof lantern into the ridge of a roof, and there are other areas where a roof lantern can work well if the design and installation are carried out correctly.

Roof lanterns were first used in the Georgian era at a time when the first orangeries and conservatories were being built. The roof lantern allowed light into the stairwell of a property and into other areas of the home, an important consideration when without electric or gaslight, candle power was the only lighting available and interiors could be dim and dark even on sunny days.

At the time glass was still made by hand and was thus expensive, so initially architects had to reserve the use of roof lanterns when designing fine town and country houses for wealthy clients.

In the second half of the Victorian era, glass started to be machine made and became more affordable. At the same time society became more affluent and the interest in glass structures influenced by the Crystal Palace built for the Great Exhibition of 1851, led to a greater demand for glass to be used in the building of homes,

Both the Victorian's and Edwardian's used roof lanterns wherever they were needed for both practical and aesthetic reasons - domestically to introduce light over landings and stairwells, in billiard rooms, reception rooms and kitchens. Roof lanterns were also incorporated into the design and architecture of hotels and in places of education and public buildings such as town halls and public libraries.

It is sadly true that many of these fine and imposing structures were prone to leak, due to the limitation of contemporary construction and sealing materials. What's more, single glazing meant that they allowed heat to escape, so the areas beneath them could be uncomfortable or expensive to heat during the winter. Unfortunately, this meant that the owners often reduced the size of the roof lantern, and with it the available light, or boarded them over completely so that the area beneath had to be illuminated with electric light.

Ventilation was also sometimes required in these early roof lanterns and this could only be provided by manual opening via a crank rod to turn the window mechanism open or closed. Very inconvenient if it suddenly began to rain.

Fortunately today we have the benefit of modern dry double glazing techniques, advanced sealing compounds and automatic electric mechanisms for opening and closing roof lantern windows.

These improvements, together with the use of sealed double glazed panels ensure that modern roof lanterns can maintain a traditional appearance while offering, structural Integrity and durability together with good insulation properties.

What's more, the use of durable hardwood timber and high quality microporous paints and stains ensures that a modern roof lantern will last for many years with minimum maintenance.

If you have an aluminum roof there will be times you will be in need of aluminum roof repair. When the damage is done, it needs to be taken care of quickly. Let's take a look at some things to do to make sure you and your aluminum roof repair are doing well.

If you have an aluminum roof and for some reason whether it be weather or an accident, the aluminum roof repair should be done quickly because it will corrode at a fast rate. If you know you will not be able to permanently repair theroof quickly, there are some temporary things you can do to start the ball rolling. If the hole is small, you can use steel wool or fine sand paper to clean around the damage. This will prepare the surface for something called epoxy putty. Marine versions of epoxy putty are good enough to plug a hole on an aluminum boat, and can be used for your roof repair temporarily until you can finish the job. This part is not hard, and you really do not need any experience. Just be safe when you get on the roof.

If aluminum roof repair is for your mobile home, there are plenty of things to watch out for. If you know you have a leak, before you get out on the roof, make sure you are not stepping into the spaces between the spars. The spars are directly under the aluminum and hold the roof into position. Also, use flat soled shoes to walk out on the roof, or you may end up causing more damage than you repair. When you are on the roof, inspect the things that go up through the roof, like pipes or vents. There are seals around them that are likely causes of leaks. If the cracks on these items are less than one quarter inch, you can simply fill them in with some sealant or roof patch. Put a glob of it on the crack and smooth it out. Make sure you do this well before a rain. If the cracks on the roof are larger than one quarter inch, you will need to use the sealant along with glass fiber fabric. Coat the fabric with the sealant, and put it on a section that is also coated with sealant. Roll it down flat against the cracks with pressure enough to squish the sealant into the crack. Repeat if necessary.

If you find that you have many areas that need repair, you may want to hire a contractor to replace your roof. On motor homes, the roof made of aluminum is not only slick, but may need some attention a regular person will not be able to do. For the smaller holes, it does not take much experience to do aluminum roof repair successfully. Simply use the epoxy after cleaning and then get the area permanently repaired or replaced later.

Another effective way in building family relationships is finding a common ground and making compromises not only on your schedules but also on your various interests. It is a good idea to take turns going to your favorite places when out on a family trip. Take their opinion on where they would want to go, rather than forcing up on your choice on them.

Repair & Maintenance of the Bernina 830 Record Sewing Machine

#9 MOST COMMON PROBLEM:

OILING

There is a great deal of confusion as to whether, where, what with, and how much to oil Bernina machines. Your owner's manual is indispensable in this regard. It not only tells you where and how much to oil, but also which oil to use.

First, a word about the oil itself. The safest oil to use is that which came with the machine, or that which can be purchased from a dealer. Bernina oil should say "Bernina" on the tube. If you have any doubts, for instance if you have purchased a used machine and the oil is suspect, it's probably a good idea to throw that oil out and get some more. Bernina oil is very light in viscosity, and is almost clear.
The area that is most critical to oil is between the shuttle and the shuttle race. (See owners manual) Oil this about every second time the machine is used for any length of time. Just a half drop will do.
Over-oiling just makes a mess. It's also a good idea to oil the pin on the shuttle that the bobbin case fits over, and a little on the bobbin case latch.

Having said the above about the type of oil, I will say that I personally have used Singer brand oil (found at any Wal-mart) with good results. "Three-in-One" oil or any kind of motor or vegetable oil should NOT be used on sewing machines at all. I have seen machines virtually ruined with the wrong kind of oil.

#3 MOST COMMON PROBLEM:

BURRED OR BLUNTED SHUTTLE POINT

A "burred" or blunted shuttle pont produces a variety of symptoms. There may be occasional or irregular skipping of some of the stitches. Or, the thread may periodically shred or even break. Sometimes there will be small loops of thread on the underside of the fabric.

The "shuttle point" refers to the area on the shuttle pictured below that is directly behind the needle. It is literally sharply pointed in order to pick up the thread loop as the shuttle passes behind the needle. Because of the close tolerances of the Bernina, or due to using "knit" needles like the Singer Yellow Band, or excessive pulling on the fabric as you sew, sometimes the sharp point becomes burred, blunted or even bent. This causes the thread to hang on the shuttle rather than passing smoothly around it. The problem can sometimes be detected with the naked eye, but a surer method is to stroke the shuttle point top, bottom, and sides with your finger. Any burr or roughness will quickly be detected.

If a rough spot is detected, usually it can be smoothed, saving the considerable expense of a new shuttle. I use a Dremel tool with a rubber wheel but extreme care must be taken to not blunt the shuttle point or change the basic shape. A safer method is to use 600 grit or finer sandpaper, rubbing lightly in the same direction of the shuttle point.

Roof Repair Or Roof Replacement?

Here is the scenario that many homeowners have been in: The roof is leaking, it's been on for 12 years and this isn't the first time you've dealt with it leaking. The question going through your head is: Should I repair or replace my roof?

There are several points to consider when trying to make this decision and keep in mind that no two roofs are the same. Converting Christians to Christ

A pretty young Hindu woman was assigned to my desk for what the local University referred to as a "job shadowing" assignment. The objective was for the girl to spend 4 hours with an individual whose profession was that which she hoped to enter upon graduation. So, she scheduled an appointment with me and, at the appointed time, set about picking my brain in regard to the communications and marketing field. She was so enthusiastic and wanted to learn all that she could about America and its people. Naturally, we reached a point where our conversation turned to religion. She stated that it seemed everyone she met at school was overly concerned about getting her to convert to Christianity and how she was tiring of this. She said someone even left a Bible on the ground outside her apartment door and added, "If that's what THEY think of their holy book, well...I threw it in the trash." I said, "I assure you, that's not MY mission. I'm trying to convert Christians to Christ." She laughed. We had a great visit. She left with the Bible I kept by my computer and a promise that I was here if she needed help. My wife and I intend to have her over for supper.

Far too many Christians are simply clueless about the teachings of Jesus, especially in comparison to what they know of the teachings of their denomination. Face it, not only has denominationalism never gained anyone entrance to Heaven, but it proves to be a very shaky foundation when times of testing come.

Do you recall the parable of the two building contractors? The Bible has two records of this parable. One is in Luke 6:47-49. The other is in Matthew 7:24-29. These verses record that the people were "astonished at His doctrine." Part of that doctrine was the story He told about building on a good foundation. Paul also refers to building a foundation as being part of the doctrine of Christ: In Hebrews 6:1, he says,"therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ...not laying again the foundation...." Paul then continues to list the content of the doctrine of Jesus.

As "Christians" - a word that means "little Christs" (after all, it's Him we should aspire to; the Head of the Body) - we must set ourselves upon something solid, a rock upon which we can assuredly set foot. That rock is nothing less than the doctrine of Christ. You see, there are three types of doctrine mentioned in Scripture: the doctrine of man, the doctrine of devils and the doctrine of Christ and of God. Second John 1:9-11 reads as follows: "Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son. If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed. For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds."

A CLOSER LOOK AT HIS DOCTRINE

Let's look at 2 John 9 in the original language, okay? Get out that concordance and check this out for yourself: 'Whosoever goeth onward' (Greek: pas o proagwn). In other words, 'Every one who goes ahead.' Proagw literally means "to go on before." (See Mark 11:9). That in itself seems fine, industrious, like an ambitious self-starter...but wait! The text then says: 'And abideth not in the teaching OF Christ' (Greek: kai me menwn en te didache tou Christou). NOT the teaching about Christ, but the teaching OF or FROM Christ.

There it is! THAT alone is the standard of Christian doctrine; the teachings FROM Jesus TO all those who choose to follow Him. Over thirty times the Scriptures make some reference, some variation, to following Him; only ONE to being "born again." I believe God's trying to tell us something. We Christians make every effort to get people to be "born again" in accordance with our particular denomination's system for doing so, but make a universally meager attempt at teaching the Doctrine of Christ and thereby making disciples as Jesus commands us in Matthew 28:18-20: "...Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Our negligence in obeying this command explains MUCH of the problem in the Body of Christ today. We're vastly illiterate to what the Teacher taught and display a gross lack of concern regarding that of which we ARE aware.

The walk of Christ is the example for the Christian walk. Look at these verses in 1 John 2:6; 7:16; 18:19. Why did the author write so much about this subject? When this letter was written, the Gnostics claimed to be the enlightened ones of the day, the thinking class, and were anxious to leave Jesus in the dust as they raced forth into their own brand of spirituality. This same struggle continues today among scores as they approach Biblical studies. Is Jesus merely some sort of landmark along our path, or is He the goal, our example, as He claimed He was? Progress is good, but progress TOWARD Christ is what's important, NOT progress away from Him.

"Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils," (1Timothy 4:1). It's clear that in these dark and evil days many will give heed to such doctrines of devils. Satan, who appears as an angel of light, and his ministers as ministers of righteousness (2 Corinthians 11:14,15), are seducing multitudes across the globe.

Biblical truth has been replaced with emotional substitutes.

Entertainment has replaced searching the Scriptures.

Many are being deceived and downright lulled into a false sense of security as they settle for Religion over Relationship with God. 2 Thessalonians 2:3 tells us that before the return of Christ, there will be a major defection from TRUTH in the Body of Christ. Jesus stated in John 8:32: "And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." We can be sure that Satan will do all he can to keep people in spiritual and religious bondage. Hosea 4:6 rings true. It states: "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge."

The doctrine of Christ is presented by John as something required in order to have "both the Father and the Son." In presenting this concept, John uses the phrase, "he that abideth in the doctrine of Christ" (vs. 9). "Abideth" is from the Greek menon and means "to live, have as one's sphere; hence, to persist, walk in, or continue."

In other words, the doctrine of Christ is the realm of one who has God. I refer to this as one's "righteousness realm." To "abide in the doctrine of Christ" is not just an occasional acquaintance with His teachings, but familiarity and contact; you LIVE there and it resides IN you.

The doctrine of Christ is also presented by John as the means of revealing the worst-case consequences for recognizing a person's spiritual identity and acceptance (vs. 10, 11). First, the one not bringing the doctrine of Christ is characterized by "evil deeds." In other words, the absence of the doctrine of Christ is the presence of false teaching. Second, to accept, or fellowship, with those who do NOT bring the doctrine of Christ may lead to the spiritual seduction of the "partaker of his evil deeds" (vs. 11).

I'm stressing the two consequences of "abiding in the doctrine of Christ" to show the importance of this way of living. Some have wanted to segregate the two consequences. In today's ecumenical, why-can't-we-all-get-along climate, some seem to prefer belief in Jesus' deity as the sole requirement for fellowship. So, anyone who says they believe in Jesus' deity (doctrine ABOUT Christ) is considered a Christian. Those who restrict the doctrine of Christ to mean only teaching ABOUT Jesus and not include teaching FROM Jesus, end up accepting and incorporating the thinking that belief in Jesus' deity is all anybody needs. That's not belief; that's mere acknowledgement. Again, demons believe and they tremble (James 2:19).

We must understand "doctrine of Christ" in 2 John 1:9 to mean the doctrine FROM Jesus. Granted, we should exercise great caution in declaring what constitutes the Lord's teaching or doctrine. Those things that Jesus taught and/or exemplified or, at the very lest, implied, are the only things that can logically be looked upon as His doctrine. Some say, "but the Lord did many things besides what's written in Scripture...what if He did and said other things that we'll never know of?" It's true, John 21:25 says, "And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written."

Let's think about this for a moment, shall we? First of all, if we don't have it written down to follow, why worry about it? Either the Scripture that we DO have was inspired by the Holy Spirit or it wasn't (2 Timothy 3:16 declares that is WAS). We can ALL focus on what we DO have in Scripture easily enough and not fuss about what one contends that we COULD have, but DON'T have, because it wasn't written about. Doing otherwise is basing our beliefs on conjecture and assumptions. Ludicrous!

Secondly, regarding that verse, let's refrain from checking our brains at the proverbial door. In three years of ministry, subtracting the recorded miracles, bath time, dinner time, prayer time, alone time, travel time, weddings, Sabbaths in the synagogue, not to mention the townsfolk's work time, school time, cleaning and cooking time, and chores and errands that might have kept many people from running to listen to the Rabbi teach, that leaves very little room for many more miracles that "COULD" have been written about, logically speaking. Sure, He might have raised more dead, healed more lame people, but we caught the drift in reading that which we DO have and didn't need more examples, obviously, or the Holy Spirit would have provided us more stuff that He deemed necessary. As far as what Jesus taught, His message of redemption and salvation is already VERY apparent in what we DO have to read. Aren't they? Don't we have enough to understand these concepts? Could it be that there were some really different teachings - the kind of stuff argued about by various denominations today - that never made it into the Book? I can't swallow that. The things we already have are enough to keep us studying and praying and debating as it is. Why would He have done anything more that we cannot even read about? Such can only be referred to as anti-doctrine and must be classified as mere conjecture.

Third, what John wrote there in chapter 21 verse 25 was mere hyperbole; an exaggeration. If I told John once, I told him 'a thousand times," stop exaggerating! With all our differences regarding the doctrine of Christ, it's a miracle that entire towns were "turned upside down" by the preaching of the Gospel.

You get the idea.

Many will try to force 2 John 9 into serving as the proof text for dismembering the Body of Christ. That's not right either. Such a practice opens the door for the spirit of Phariseeism and essentially declares that if anyone's practices disagree with our group's understandings or interpretations, then they are not abiding in the doctrine of Christ. In other words, "MY idea of what constitutes Christ's doctrine has been elevated to equal footing with God's Holy Word itself!" That's the epitome of arrogance, and will only result in further divisions within the Church.

THE FIRM FOUNDATION

The steps for building a good spiritual foundation are given in Luke 6:47:

1. Whosoever cometh to me...

2. Heareth my sayings...

3. And doeth them.

All three steps are required. It is not enough to acknowledge Jesus and His deity; Satan does that much. We must also listen to then DO what He has said. We must take personal action. Luke talks about a person coming to Jesus, hearing what He says, then failing to respond: "Why call ye me Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?" (Luke 6:46). Anyone can read the doctrine of Christ and still not act upon it, preferring instead manmade doctrines and dogmas, traditions never once taught by Jesus that do nothing in terms of advancing His cause on planet Earth. Jesus is NOT truly Lord of a person's life until that person responds to His teachings. Far too often, Christians who claim to love Christ are far more enamored with their denomination or even their own spiritual work done in His Name.

The man who came to Jesus, heard His Word, and then acted on it is referred to as 'wise.' This man made sure the spiritual foundation of His life was firm. He dug deeper, outside his comfort zone - those first few inches of soil, removing everything between him and the Rock, Jesus Christ. the doctrine of Christ is the plan which shows how to build our spiritual life. It must be accepted as the absolute authority and the source of our spiritual foundation. Why? "...the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man; but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost," (2 Peter 1:21). The purpose of God's revelation is given in 2 Timothy 3:16: "All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness." In other words, the Bible contains instruction in the basic doctrine of Christ. It also provides reproof and correction for failing to follow these teachings. Nothing else was needed.

CRACKS IN THE FOUNDATION

I knew a couple in ministry whose marriage was falling apart. Neither side would budge and the family of eight was literally divided. They were engaged in a civil war that wound up playing a huge part in the crumbling of an entire 300-member congregation. One thing that I recall vividly about their lovely home was this: an enormous crack in the foundation occurred during the time before he moved out, never to return. It literally ran diagonally from one corner of the house to the other, cracked the garage in half and shattered the driveway and a brick retaining wall between them and their neighbor. Extraordinary!

The man who built on a wrong foundation listened to the teachings of Christ but did not take personal action on what he heard. He is called a foolish man and is compared to a man who built without a foundation (Luke 6:49). His house was built on the sand instead of the rock (Matt 7:27). We build on the sand spiritually when we base our Christianity on the traditions or religious beliefs of man or of devils. It is thinking we can make ourselves spiritual or gain God's acceptance by our good works, church attendance, religious ceremonies and the like without any real, personal, relational, intimate knowledge of Jesus Himself.

Amazing! He's the ONLY way to the Father (John 14:6) but we foolishly try to attain that relationship by a zillion OTHER methods and systems INCLUDING Religion.

THE STORMS OF LIFE

Jesus' story of the two builders reveals another great truth; it's the nature of life on Earth to be stormy. Circumstances often result in many personal crises. We face death, disease, and disaster. Even Believers in Jesus face problems. Acts 14:22 warns that "we must through much tribulation enter into the Kingdom of God." Jesus said, in John 16:33, "In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world." No one escapes the storms of life; they're necessary to test us and prove to us what we're made of. The storms of life are the same for all people are basically the same. What differs is how we respond to them. If your spiritual life doesn't have the right foundation, you will fall. What comes out of us when our come is shaken reveals what's been in there all along. Just as the house built on sand, the fall will be great. If your life is built on the right foundation - the teachings of Jesus Christ - the storm will not shake you: "Yet once more I shake not the earth only, but also heaven. And this word, Yet once more, signifieth the removing of those things that are shaken, as of things that are made, that those things which cannot be shaken may remain,"(Hebrews 12:26-27). When the shaking experiences come, that which cannot be shaken will remain. Those who stand have built a firm spiritual foundation.

THE FIRM FOUNDATION: A PRE-REQUISITE

As any building contractor can attest, a good foundation is a prerequisite for constructing a solid building. The word "prerequisite" means something is "required before." A proper foundation is required before constructing the "superstructure" upon it. A proper spiritual foundation is a prerequisite to spiritual maturity.

In Hebrews 6:1-3 we are told we cannot go on to perfection unless the spiritual foundation is properly laid. Spiritual maturity is the superstructure [the building] which rests on the spiritual foundation. If the foundation is wrong then the superstructure will not stand and you will never achieve spiritual maturity.

I believe that the lessons I broadcast by email explain things which must be part of our spiritual foundation. But as the parable of the two houses indicates, it is not enough to be INFORMED of the Lord's basic doctrine. We must make a personal response to these teachings and integrate these truths into the spiritual foundation of our lives. If we do not respond, we are like the man in the mirror described by James: "But be ye doers of the Word, and not hearers only, deceiving our own selves. For if any be a hearer of the Word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass; For he beholdeth himself and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed," (James 1:22-25).

Pest Droppings in the Attic - Pest Problems

Sometimes I wonder how these large animals can get through such small holes in our homes and into our attics and crawlspace's. A few years ago, I was working on a home that had water damage to the siding that needed to be fixed. The homeowner of course didn't want anymore water damage and this required repairing roof, the original cause for the siding damage.

When I bid the job, I had no idea what I was about to run into. The first day on the job, went smoothly as I repaired some damage fascia board, but the next day I was in for a surprise, as I removed the damaged siding, I found what looked like dog poop in the attic.

I was looking around in the attic and trying to figure out how a dog could of got up there. I know that I shouldn't have, but I walked around the home inspecting it for a large hole, any holes, something that a small dog could have wiggled his way into. I got my latter off of the truck and then went on the roof, trying to find a place where a dog could have got into the attic.

I couldn't find any holes and after wasting about an hour, I decided it was time to get back to work and since the homeowner wasn't there, I couldn't show him my new findings or ask him any questions. I cleaned up the mess and repaired the water damaged siding, but in the back of my head I kept thinking about how in the heck a dog got up in the attic.

To make a short story even shorter, when the homeowner arrived home that day, I showed him my findings and he informed me that he didn't have a dog. He did however inform me that he has been hearing something walking around in his attic for about a year now. He had a pretty good idea that they were raccoons.

I told him, that I had inspected his home and only found one small hole on top of his roof underneath the roof eave, but there's no way that a small raccoon could fit through that hole. He told me that you would be surprised, what these animals were capable of squeezing into and out of.

Well that's about it, the mystery was solved, I repaired the small hole in the attic and have never heard from the homeowner again. Hopefully that meant I did my job well and not that he was embarrassed about the poop in the attic.

How Do You Prevent Termite Damage? Protect Your Home From Termites by Learning How to Detect Them

Termite infestations are hard to detect and hard to eradicate and they cause lot of damage to houses around the country. As with many other problems and diseases the best method to combat termites is to prevent them from infecting the house in the first place.

In order to know how to prevent a termite infestation we must learn about the way they operate and live. The types of termites found in United States are actually subterranean termites. There are also other kinds of termites such as dry wood termites but those other types are not as common and do not cause as much damage as subterranean termites.

Subterranean termites, as indicated by their name live underground in nests. These nests are usually situated five to six feet under the ground though sometimes they also nest above ground as well. The individual worker termites, about one eight of an inch long in length, travel or tunnel hundreds of feet in search of food usually on the surface of the soil to carry back to the nest. Some of their favorite foods include wood, paper and other substances, used by humans in building construction and in variety of household items. Damage caused by the termites by eating into these substances may take a long time to appear as they only consume tiny amounts of food. But through the gradual accumulation of damages, it can be quite substantial. Wood for instance will gradually hollow out even though no external sign is detected. Damage can be extensive if the nest is situated inside the house.

Termites require lots of water to survive and one of the methods of detecting them is through the observation of tiny mud tubes on the soil that transfer water to their nests. Other sign of detection is when the swarming occurs. In spring or summer thousands of winged termites will emerge and try to fly way to establish new nests. This will only last few hours and most of them will die and will not do any physical harm.

If you suspect that a termite infestation of your house is a possibility, the best method of prevention is to create an unsurpassable barrier between the nest and your house for worker termites. This is usually done by chemically treating the soil around and below the house. Two broad types of liquid chemicals known as termiticides can be used for this purpose. Repellents prevent the foraging termites from entering the treated soil, while non repellent chemicals kill the termites entering the treated soil. Once the barrier is established the foragers will not be able access food in the house and if a few of them have already reached the house before the treatment, they will not be able to return and will die.

However in order to be effective, the preventive treatment method has to be comprehensive and cover all the soil in contact with the house. The house owner aiming for an effective prevention should not stop at spot treating a patch of soil that may show signs of termites. Foraging termites will find ways around the treated spots easily.

Another factor to keep in mind is that most chemicals used today are effective only for up to about three to seven years. Older chemicals known to be effective in preventing termites up to twenty years were banned to protect the ground water from contamination. While chemically treating soil comprehensively every few years can be expensive, it will also be an effective preventive method and will save money on the long run by safeguarding the investment in the house.

These preventive treatments are best carried out by professionals. They will not only be able to advice and carry out the treatment more competently and use the required specialized equipment and experience but will also carry out periodic inspections. Even difficult installations such as cabinetry can be tackled by the do-it-yourselfer who is motivated and educated. If someone where to say to say the words "metal roofing" I bet most people would be thinking of the old and ugly, and often rusting, corrugated metal roof. But metal roofing materials have come a long way and have become much more popular in recent years. They are attractive, light weight, durable and fire resistant. There are many types of options for metal roofing but the main two are aluminum and steel. Each has their own benefits depending on its application.

Getting Your Swimming Pool Ready For Winter

The information you are about to read is from years of experience. If you follow these steps, you will accomplish a safe and worry free, pool closing.

The first thing you want to do is test the water and make sure all levels including pH are normal. Next you're going to want to shock your pool, and then run the filter for 24 hours. Now it's time to start closing your pool, clean out any leaves or debris and vacuum your pool thoroughly. Now you want to pour in the contents of your closing kit.

The next step will be to blow out lines or evacuate any water that might be in the lines. You can do this without emptying pool. You will need either a shop-vac or a compressor. With a compressor, you will take an old winterizing plug and remove the center screw then push a quarter inch compressor hose male adapter in the center of the winterizing plug. A # 9 plug is most efficient. You can now use this in any of the plumbing on the filter. The first way to blow lines out leave all the plugs in the filter and the pump, set the multi-port valve on filter, and close all of the plumbing line valves except for the line you wish to blow out. Open the air release on top of the filter and push the winterizing plug with the compressor line and pump air into the filter. This will push all the water out of the filter and push the water out of the line. Once you see air bubbles install the winterizing plug, do this for the skimmer and returns. Open just the main drain valve force air into the line until you see air bubbles. Then immediately close the valve this will hold air in that line and prevent water from rushing back in. If you have step jets simply open the air vents, remove the jet and plug up the fitting. Then open up the jet valve at the filter, then force air this will push all of the water out of the air vents once the water is stops coming out remove the compressor close the air vents and you're now done with blowing your lines out. Check all plugs for air bubbles.

Now you must remove to plugs in the pump remove the winterizing plug at the bottom of the filter. If you have a chlorinator, you must remove any plugs or remove the chlorinator itself. Make absolutely sure that you shake out any water that may be trapped inside the chlorinator. Set the multi-port valve in between any two selections this will hold the valve open and prevent internal damage.

Do not cover the pump for the winter. It is important that the pump to be able to breathe you do not want the inside of the pump to oxidize. If you have a heater make sure you turn off the gas, turn the gas valve off and remove the winterizing plug under the manifold. It is a good idea to cover the heater. Heater covers are available in our online catalog. This will prevent acorns and any other debris to get inside of the heater, and possibly cause a fire on start up.

Should you choose to use a vacuum to clear the plumbing lines, the easiest way to do that would be to get your-self a couple of pieces of schedule 40 PVC pipe, count how many returns you have and that is how many 1 1/2" 90A streets you will need. Count how many skimmers you have, and that is how many 1 1/2" male adapter's your need. For the skimmers measure how many inches it is from the bottom the skimmer to the top of the water, and add 2". Cut a piece of PVC at that measurement, glue the male adapter to the PVC, wrap the threads with Teflon tape and screw it in the suction whole at the bottom of the skimmer. You may also use our blow out gizmo. Make sure you use Teflon tape on the threads. This will allow you to blow out the skimmer, and it will act as a baffle to prevent the skimmer from cracking if it freezes. Now measure the return holes to top of the water and add 2 inches. Cut the PVC at this length glue the 90A streets wrap the threads in Teflon tape, and screw this in the returns, make sure the pipe is sticking out of the water. Now you can winterized the plumbing, open all the valves go over to these pieces of pipe turn your vacuum on and suck all the water and lines. After the water is out of the lines use a number eight winterizing plug in the PVC and tighten.

Open the pump trapped put the vacuum hose in the opening open the main drain valve. Reverse the vacuum and blow air into this line. You may not see air coming-out of the main drain, but let it go for 30 seconds and then shut the valves. This will push any water below the freeze level and prevent freezing. (Note some concrete in-ground pools may have to be evacuated or blown out by a compressor). If you have a problem removing any plugs or you notice places were water may end up laying it is advisable to buy our any freeze. Just for this anywhere there may be a problem. If you use the PVC in the skimmer, you must take a quart bottle, such as an empty algaecide bottle. Fill it halfway with small stones install the cap turned upside down and put it in the skimmer. This will prevent the skimmer from cracking when it freezes.

To remove handrails and ladders, simply lift the decorative cover, loosen the bolt approximately a quarter inch up and then hammer it down. This will free your ladder or handrail. Then simply lift it out of the cup. If you have a vinyl pool, do not empty it below the skimmer keep the water level as you would in the summer. This will prevent the liner from shrinking in the corners and shortening the life of the liner. There is no reason to lower a vinyl pool. Vinyl manufactures will not cover warranties on pools that have been lowered. If you have a concrete pool, you must lower the pool, at least 1 foot below the skimmer. This will prevent the bond beam from cracking causing the tiles and coping to fall off. Now you're about ready to put the cover on.

For water tube type covers, fill all the water tubes only three quarters of the way, install the cover and place the water tubes on the cover around the perimeter of the pool. Make sure there's enough water tubes used that they are touching. It is not advisable to put the water tubes in the cover loops. Should the cover blow in during the winter, if the tubes are attached to the cover this will drag the cover down making it almost impossible to reinstall the cover with the water tubes.

If you have a safety cover raise all of the brass anchors install the safety cover as you normally would. If there are any loose straps, you should tighten them.

For water tube covers place the cover pump in the center and pump the cover off when ever it rains. Do not pump the cover, when the water is frozen, this will damage the pump. If you have a safety cover and a vinyl pool, install a cover pump in the skimmer. This will prevent the water from being pumped out too much and allows you easy access.

For concrete pools, it is important you keep the water level below the tiles, if you have a step install a cover pump on the second tread down.

Acting As Your Own General Contractor When Building Your Dream Home

This article is intended for the DIY (Do It Yourself) home builder; however, it is very useful information for the new home buyer to understand what processes you can monitor even if you are not acting as the general contractor and hiring a general contractor. For the inexperienced DIY home builder, acting as a general contractor is one of the most stressful things anyone can undertake. After that statement, you ask yourself Why would anyone really want to be the general contractor for their new home? Well the number one reason is to save money, and in our society its all about the money isnt it? It doesnt necessarily mean that you are building the home (but with this approach sweat equity has a whole new meaning), you are only managing the sub-contractors.

Successful general contactors are either born good, or have been trained to be good. You, as your own general contractor, do not have the time to be as good as a contractor who makes their living building homes. For this reason, I will give you some guidelines to help you out and feel a bit more comfortable managing your new dream home as your own general contractor:

Define Your Project; I have published an article on very effective ways to decide on a dream home floor plan. I recommend that you read that along with this article. The article is called Home Floor Plan Designing for Your Future Home by Robert Kempe. Once you have decided on the floor plan and all the associated up front planning projects, such as finding the right plot of land, gathering information on building codes and permits, having signed construction drawings, etc. you have to apply for the building permits. With the homework of gathering all this information prior the application process and having your construction drawings drawn to comply with city, county and state codes this process is just a paper work issue. If you have not properly done this entire process prior to the application, this will slow your time frame down considerably. Most DYI builders wait for the building permit application to find out what is needed. Make it easier on yourself and do it first.

Execution of the Project; Now that you have a clearly defined project you can get accurate quotes from the contractors. The construction disciplines you will need are as follows: Electricians, Plumbers, HVAC (Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning), Framers, Concrete, Drywall, Finishers, Painters, Roofers, Siding, Landscaping, Windows and Doors, Garage door. Etc. Keep in mind that most contractors will have multiple disciplines and will try to combine them as much as possible either with their own work force or they may hire out subcontractors as well. This is how you execute the project. Do your homework on the contractors that you will want to work with on your home. Ask people who you know that have recently built homes who they have used as contractors. Actually any resource on contractor evaluation is helpful. Have them evaluate the experience. With this process you can then get three to five contractor references from trusted resources without involving any salesmen. Have a set of construction plans ready for each of the contractors that you are going to have bid from the list you have generated. Make sure that all the disciplines will be bid upon.

Deciding who to hire as your subcontractors; You do not always have to take the lowest bid! You want the contractor that is the most qualified and most prepared to build your home. It is highly suggested that each of the contractors break down the categories and itemize how they arrived at their price. This is best done by communicating this up front before receiving their price. Once you have all this information, evaluate the prices according to their breakdown. Rate the contractor on their responses on a scale of 1-10 with 10 being the highest rank. If the bids are close then its a matter of what contractor you favor the most. If there is a large gap in the prices, you need to determine why. This is where your breakdown of the work performed and the associated prices can help you determine this. This is also where you find out which contractors are the most serious and most qualified and which contractors are easier to work with. This might lead you to conclude that the best contractor isnt always the lowest price. You get what you pay for!

Managing the Subcontractors You thought deciding who to hire as your subcontractor was difficult, try managing them! This is where most of the stress and sweat equity occurs. I have been a construction project manager for 15+ years and honestly, every time I am assigned a new project the fear of the unknown working relationships with each of the subs is a major concern. I feel your pain! To help you in your management, have a schedule ready during the bidding war between contractors. Have this presented at the time you present the construction drawings. In fact, have three schedules! What this will generate is three different prices from each contractor. Use this as part of your evaluation as mentioned in the previous paragraph. Your long schedule, medium schedule and short schedule will generate different responses. You want this information up front so that when it comes time to sign a contact with the subs, you can put in clauses that if they do not hold the schedule there are financial burdens placed on them. This will protect you from mismanagement on their part.

After all the schedules and contracts are agreed upon, you become more than the customer, now you are the boss. Everyday you need to communicate with the subs and get an updated detailed report on what, where, when, how and why they are on or off schedule. Manage the project by the schedule. Keep in mind that the schedule will change if you decide to change your scope of work by issuing change orders (example: changing the cupboard or cabinet size, the flooring, or appliance). Keep in mind that during this time, this is a small business and your profit is represented by how close you come to your original agreed upon costs associated with the schedule after the contract signing. We could talk about management all day long. In fact there are training courses on this subject that cost thousands of dollars. Hopefully this bit of information will get you on the right track and help make a smooth transition from concept to actually building your dream home. Remember this rule of thumb, the more you prepare the better you will be when handling the bumps in the road. Gathering information prior to needing it will actually save you more money, time and stress than you can probably calculate.

Change Your Thinking About Life

What do I do when I get down and out. Well that use to happen to me often and I seemed to suffer with some minor depression. It would seem like time would stand still. I would look at the clock and notice the time. Let's say 2:23 in the afternoon. I would look back to see what time it was about fifteen minutes latter and it would be 2:26. Wow what in the heck is going on with this clock.

I just couldn't believe it seemed like the day would never end. I would just sit there and think about all the stuff going on in my life, good and bad of course. This seemed to last until I was in my early twenties. I just didn't want to feel like this any more. I made a Conscious design not to get depressed period. I never wanted to feel like that again.

I read a book on ESP and in the book it described visualizing a rose as you went to sleep. I started doing this every night and while I was doing the exercise it seemed to make me feel relaxed in a way I never had felt before. The reason for the exercise was to teach you to visualize something peaceful. This in turn would put you in a peaceful state of mind.

Then a thought came into my noggin. What if when ever I start to feel bad or seem to be going into a sort of depressive state of mind I change my thoughts. It worked... I would start to visualize something else that made me feel comfortable and give me a peaceful feeling. Man was I surprised with my results.

Keep in mind I didn't think of this all on my own but I did put the pieces of the puzzle I needed to together that I needed to change my life. It seemed like I could use this form of self control in different parts of my life. If I was at work and someone made me mad.... Well this didn't work all the time... I still got mad. Let's pick something else OK.

I would worry about something on the job that wasn't going right. Then I would get irritated over something else that wasn't even related to what I was worrying about. Why did I take it out on the other person when what I was really mad about was something else. We do this all the time in our lives. We seem to get mad, get even or give up. Why do we do this and what can we do to stop it.

My main point to all of this is we can change our thinking and change our lives. We can learn new things to change our thinking. We don't need to give up hope that we will always be like this.
